1. House of Refuge
Just outside the gates of Sailfish Point, the House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar is the oldest structure in Martin County. The building is the sole remaining of ten original houses built along Florida’s east coast to provide shelter for shipwreck survivors. The museum displays historical maritime artifacts, a model ship collection, shipwreck artifacts, and much more. Additionally, just 100 yards offshore, the shipwreck of Georges Valentine allows guests to dive or snorkel through one of only 12 underwater archaeological preserves within the state of Florida.
2. The Lyric Theatre
Located on Flagler Avenue in Downtown Stuart,
The Lyric Theatre is the city’s cherished home for the performing arts. Originally built in 1925 as a silent movie house, the 500-seat theatre represents the area’s colorful history and is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A variety of events are hosted year-round for all ages and interests, including classical theatre, musicals, orchestra and jazz concerts, big-name talent, movies, and much more.
3. Elliott Museum
Founded in 1960, the
Elliott Museum was created to showcase the genius of local Stuart inventor Sterling Elliott. The museum features installments and exhibits dedicated to inspiring creativity through history, art, and community culture for the people who live in and visit the Treasure Coast. From the most comprehensive assemblage of Model A trucks in the world to one of the largest collections of signed baseball-related items, the museum is filled with something for everyone to enjoy.
4. Downtown Stuart Riverwalk
Located directly off the St. Lucie River,
Downtown Stuart is always a hub of activity. This walkable outdoor streetscape offers over 50 locally owned shops and boutiques to peruse. When hunger strikes, numerous waterfront restaurants offer everything from white-linen fine dining to casual eclectic foodie experiences. On Sunday mornings, stop by this charming downtown to explore the local green market, or enjoy music from local musicians at the weekly waterfront concert series, Rock’N Riverwalk.
5. Art Galleries Abound
With a beautiful natural setting to call home, it comes as no surprise that Martin County is a hub for artists from around the world. From beautiful murals incorporated in the Florida Mural Trail to endless arts festivals and exhibitions, art in Martin County comes in all shapes, sizes, and mediums. Downtown Stuart is home to numerous art galleries for every interest, including
Geoffrey C. Smith’s bronze sculptures,
Rare Earth Gallery’s ceramic and glass sculptures, and
Gallery 36’s photography and fine art paintings. Built in 1937, the art deco-style
Court House Cultural Center hosts fine art exhibitions created by local, regional, and internationally renowned artists. Just a short drive away in Port Salerno, the
Fish House Art Center is home to five resident artists that include a ceramicist, fine art painters, beaded jewelry artists, and a weaver. Visitors are welcome to watch the resident artists work and can purchase their creations. With so many incredible art venues to peruse, Martin County created an
Arts & Culture Trail to help residents find them all with ease.
6. Downtown Jensen Beach
At the east end of Jensen Beach Boulevard along the St. Lucie River, Downtown Jensen Beach is another hub of activity where live music always fills the air. This quaint waterfront downtown is filled with a variety of locally owned shops and restaurants sporting Caribbean colors and island-style flavors. Jan’s Place is a hotspot for breakfast and baked goods, while Mulligan’s Beach House, Crawdaddy’s, The Hoffman, and Tako Tiki provide outdoor dining with coastal breezes, tropical cocktails, and live music. Cork’d Wine Bar and 11 Maple Street also provide delectable options with a more refined dining experience. On Thursday evenings, stop by this charming downtown for Jammin’ Jensen, where local bands and artists put their talents on display.
