Nestled along Florida’s Treasure Coast, Martin County offers an abundance of opportunities for families to connect with nature and embrace their natural surroundings. From stunning wildlife encounters to thrilling outdoor adventures, this picturesque destination is a haven for those seeking to explore the natural wonders that lie just beyond the beaten path. As summer rolls in and the kids are out of school, the region has prepared an exciting event calendar that will educate and inspire all ages. Check out just a few of the summer events residents are looking forward to.
Every Thursday: Nighttime Sea Turtle Walks
Families can witness a nesting loggerhead sea turtle every Thursday as a part of the Florida Oceanographic Society’s nighttime sea turtle walks. Each walk begins with an educational presentation at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center in Stuart, where visitors will learn about sea turtle biology and conservation efforts. Guests will then walk across the street to Stuart Beach to observe firsthand their nesting behaviors.
Every Saturday: Nature Adventures
Nature Adventures is a family-friendly interactive program series at Jonathan Dickinson State Park that encourages kids and families to discover and explore the outdoors. Each week presents an opportunity to learn something new, with a wide array of topics ranging from wildlife, insects, freshwater ecology, scavenger hunts, nature hikes, paddling, and more.
June 10: Creating Edible Landscapes
For those wishing to transform their yard into a sustainable garden, join TruGreens Landscape Designs for an edible landscapes workshop at the Spirit Well Sensory Lounge in Stuart. This class welcomes families with children, or anyone interested in growing vegetable and fruit trees and plants at home. The group will continue to meet every second Saturday of the month to discuss progress and also delve into various topics related to successful food growing.
June 10th: Florida’s Mighty Mangroves
Bring your favorite guidebook, binoculars, or a camera and explore one of Florida’s most fascinating ecosystems at Peck Lake Park in Hobe Sound. Discover Martin County will be hosting a guided nature hike where guests can learn what makes the park’s trees and rivers so important. The one-mile nature walk will wind through mangrove forests, trails, and along the boardwalk overlooking the Indian River Lagoon.
June 16-17: KDW Fishing Tournament
Anglers of all skill levels are welcome to test their fishing schools and raise money for a good cause at the 9th Annual KDW Fishing Tournament. Hosted at Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina in Port Salerno, enjoy some fun in the sun while trying to reel in kingfish, dolphin, wahoo, grouper, and snapper. All proceeds from the event will benefit ARC of the Treasure Coast, a nonprofit organization assisting children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Martin, St. Lucie, Palm Beach, and Okeechobee counties.
June 23: Moon Observation Night
Join the Treasure Coast Astronomical Society for a night under the stars to learn about one of the most significant celestial bodies: the moon. Taking place at Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach, children and parents alike can explore the cosmos and view the moon closer than ever before through a high-powered telescope.
